سمى حازم القرطاجني كتابه منهاج البلغاء وسراج الأدباء، وهي تسمية دقيقة مرتبطة بمنهج حازم الذي يسعى في مجمله إلى البحث في صناعة الشعر، فيتوقف عند الشعر ونظمه كما يتوقف عند المعاني والمباني والأسلوب. وقد قسم حازم أبواب كتابه إلى أربعة أقسام أطلق على كل باب منها اسم منهج، وجعل أبواب المنهج تتكون من فصول دعاها على التعاقب بمعلم أو معرف. ويمثلهذا الكتاب علامة فارقة في تاريخ البلاغة العربية بصفة عامة، وتاريخ نظرية الشعر على نحو أخص.
