The Untamed is a classic western action novel by American author Max Brand. It is the first novel about Dan Barry, also known as "Whistlin' Dan".
Whistlin' Dan Berry is one of the most interesting characters in Western fiction. With uncanny abilities he controls a wild stallion, appropriately named Satan, and a ferocious wolf dog, Black Bart. Easy going, Berry proves absolutely unforgiving when physically assaulted by a feared, vicious outlaw, Jim Silent. Seemingly without any emotions, Whistlin' Dan is relentless in his vengeful search for Silent and his outlaw gang. 
This is the first book about Whistlin’ Dan (Dan Berry). Dan is the total nature man, with the strength and cunning of a panther. He and his horse and wolf-dog communicate with one another marvelously, but he sure doesn't know how to relate to people well… The Untamed was followed by The Night Horseman (1920), The Seventh Man (1921) and Dan Barry’s Daughter (1923).
The Untamed was first published in 1919 in All Story Weekly as a six-part serial. The novel was made into a motion picture starring Tom Mix in 1920. The Night Horseman

The Seventh Man is a classic western action novel by American author Max Brand. It is the third novel about Dan Barry, also known as "Whistlin' Dan".
The Seventh Man tells part of the story of the larger-than-life western character, Dan Barry, known as “Whistling Dan,” and his alter-ego companions, Black Bart, the wolf-dog, and Satan, the invincible black stallion. It’s also the story of Kate Cumberland and the incredible five-year-old daughter of Kate and Dan, Joan.
We first see Dan as a gentle, caring man with a deep sense of fairness. But then, after six years of a peaceful life in their mountain cabin Dan, more feral than human, sets out to revenge an injustice by killing seven men. Ultimately, it is his devotion to his daughter and Kate’s love for the child that brings about the climax of the tale.
Warning: don’t look for a typical cowboy story here – it’s far deeper and stronger than that.

"Whistlin' Dan" Barry was a wild soul, as alien to the bonds of civilization as an eagle to the bars of a cage. His spirit demanded wide spaces; he was forever hearkening for the magical call of the wild geese to follow on and on beyond the beckoning horizon. Whistling Dan appears only partly in the narrative, but from beyond the grave he weaves a magic spell over Joan, his child.
