ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK

Inside Out & Back Again by Thanhha Lai, tells the story of Hà, a young girl who flees Saigon with her family during the Vietnam War and tries to adapt to a new life in Alabama. The book is written from Hà’s perspective and details the challenges of war, the refugee experience, and the complexities of immigration. The story begins in Saigon with a description of the Vietnamese New Year, but then focuses on their dangerous journey by sea. Hà then struggles to adapt to a new country, new language, and cultural differences, including prejudice and bullying. She makes new friends and learns from them, and begins to find her voice and strength. The story also tackles the theme of loss, as the family accepts the disappearance of Hà’s father.
