The initial hints of dark energy arose from studies that observed distant supernovae and measured their redshifts. When these measurements indicated that galaxies were moving away from each other at accelerating speeds, researchers were forced to rethink the previously accepted model of a decelerating universe. This unexpected acceleration suggested that some form of energy, previously unknown, was counteracting the force of gravity on a cosmic scale.
