Season 5 - Teaser

In late summer 1973, amidst the impending death of the Swedish king and upcoming national elections, Sweden was thrust into a six-day crisis that gripped the nation. On August 23, a man disguised in a wig stormed into Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm, firing shots and taking hostages. His demands: money, the release of his imprisoned friend, and an escape vehicle. As millions watched, what unfolded was not just a hostage drama but the birth of a psychological phenomenon known globally today as "Stockholm Syndrome," where hostages form a bond with their captor. This event not only captivated Sweden but also sparked a worldwide fascination with the complex dynamics of hostage situations, leaving a lasting imprint on popular culture and psychological studies.

The Stockholm syndrome

On a frigid February night in 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was fatally shot on a Stockholm street after a cinema visit with his wife. This ignited Sweden's largest and most convoluted murder investigation, marked by early blunders and an array of suspects that fueled widespread speculation. Over the years, the case has seen numerous twists, including accusations against Christer Pettersson and later, Stig Engström, known as the Skandia Man. Despite extensive efforts and public fascination, the mystery remains unsolved, continuing to haunt Swedish society and the global community intrigued by the enduring enigma of Palme's assassination.

Manhunts and madmen

In the summer of 1997, Swedish financiers Peter Mattson and Thomas Jisander lived it up on a luxurious yacht in Saint Tropez, blowing millions on extravagant parties and luxury shopping sprees. Little did the world know, their source of wealth was one of Sweden's biggest financial scams. They had manipulated the acquisition of Trustor, a major investment company, using the company's own funds—totaling around 600 million Swedish crowns (approximately 53 million U.S. dollars) The Trustor affair remains a notorious example of white-collar crime in Sweden, marked by its audacity and the dramatic courtroom twists that followed.

The Trustor con

On September 23, 2009, a meticulously planned robbery unfolded as robbers landed a helicopter on a Stockholm cash depot, making off with around 100 million Swedish crowns. Known as the Helicopter Heist, it stands out for its audacious use of a helicopter, explosives, and precise execution, captivating global attention and earning a place in criminal lore. Despite arrests and trials, the heist left lingering questions about the effectiveness of Swedish police tactics against sophisticated criminal operations.
