1971 च्या 3 डिसेंबरला भारत-पाक युद्धाला सुरुवात झाली. युद्धकाळात सर्वसामान्य माणसांना नीट भेटता येत नाही. म्हणून युद्ध संपल्यावर 25 डिसेंबरपासून 11 जानेवारीपर्यंत बांगला देशात आम्ही अनेक ठिकाणी फिरलो; अनेकांच्या गाठीभेटी घेतल्या. जे ऐकले व जे पाहिले त्यातून तेथे झालेल्या कत्तलींची व अत्याचारांची भीषणता उमगली. भारतीय जवानांचा पराक्रम,मुक्तिवाहिनीतील सैनिकांचे शौर्य व समर्पण यांच्या स्फूर्तिदायक कथा ऐकल्या. अनेक विचारवंतांच्या व भूमिगत कार्यकर्त्यांच्या मुलाखती घेतल्या. या सर्वांतून जीवनातील उदात्तता व भव्यता, क्रूरता व निर्घृणता, मृत्यूची कृष्णछाया आणि नवजीवनाचा प्रकाश यांचे अपूर्व दर्शन मला घडले! त्याच काळात बांगला देशातील विचारवंतांच्या जगात प्रवेश मिळाला, आणि त्यांच्याबरोबर केलेल्या चर्चेतून माझ्या मनातील अनेक प्रश्नांना उत्तरे मिळाली.

Through all this I had a wonderful vision of the nobility and magnificence of life, the cruelty and cruelty, the black shadow of death and the light of new life! It was during this time that Bangla entered the world of intellectuals in the country, and many questions in my mind were answered through discussions with them.
