The Religious Affections (Annotated): Enriched Edition. Puritan Discernment of Authentic Christian Experience, Emotion, Faith, and Revivalism in the First Great Awakening

Jonathan Edwards's *The Religious Affections* is a searching theological and pastoral analysis of spiritual experience, written in the aftermath of the eighteenth-century Great Awakening. Edwards asks what distinguishes genuine Christian conversion from enthusiasm, self-deception, or transient emotional excitement. Drawing upon Scripture, Reformed theology, psychology of religious experience, and careful observation of revival, he first considers signs that neither prove nor disprove saving grace, then identifies reliable "signs" of authentic faith: a transformed moral disposition, a Christ-centered love, humility, perseverance, and a desire for holiness. Its method combines scholastic precision with vivid sermonic prose, placing the work within Puritan devotional literature while anticipating later discussions of religious psychology and revivalism. Edwards (1703–1758), the foremost theologian of colonial New England, wrote amid fierce controversy over extraordinary conversions, bodily manifestations, and claims of divine inspiration. As a pastor and participant in the revivals later called the Great Awakening, he defended their genuine spiritual possibilities without excusing disorder or credulity. His intellectual formation in Reformed theology and Enlightenment-era empiricism enabled him to unite doctrinal rigor with close attention to inward experience. This book is indispensable for readers interested in Christian spirituality, revival history, Puritanism, or the perennial problem of discerning authentic religious commitment. It rewards both theological study and personal reflection, offering a demanding corrective to purely emotional religion while preserving the vital place of awakened affection in Christian faith.
