In monotheistic thought, God is usually viewed as the supreme being, creator, and principal object of faith. God is usually conceived of as being omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and omnibenevolent, as well as having an eternal and necessary existence. God is most often held to be incorporeal, with said characteristic being related to conceptions of transcendence or immanence. Some religions describe God without reference to gender, while others use terminology that is gender-specific and gender-biased. God has been conceived as either personal or impersonal. In theism, God is the creator and sustainer of the universe, while in deism, God is the creator, but not the sustainer, of the universe. In pantheism, God is the universe itself, while in panentheism, the universe is part (but not the whole) of God. Atheism is an absence of belief in any God or deity, while agnosticism is the belief that the existence of God unknown or unknowable. God has also been conceived as the source of all moral obligation, and the "greatest conceivable existent". Many notable theologians and philosophers have developed arguments for and against the existence of God. God is referred to by different names depending on the language and cultural tradition with titles sometimes used referring to God's attributes.

கடவுள் என்பவர் அண்டம் முழுவதையும் படைத்துக் காப்பவர் என்றும், அவர் எல்லாச் சக்திகளும் பொருந்தியவர் என்றும், இறப்பு, பிறப்பு, இரவு, பகல், இன்பம், துன்பம் போன்ற உலக வாழ்வில் தொடர்புடைய அனைத்தையும் கடந்து நிற்கும் ஏகாந்த (மறைபொருள்) நிலை என்றும் கடவுள் இருப்பதை நம்புபவர்கள் கருதுகின்றனர். உலகம் முழுவதிலும் பரந்திருக்கின்ற பல்வேறு மதங்களைச் சார்ந்தவர்கள் கடவுள் பற்றிப் பல விதமான கருத்துக்களைக் கொண்டவர்களாக இருக்கின்றனர். அன்பு, புனிதம், கருணை என்பவற்றின் மறு பொருள் கடவுள் என கூறுகின்றனர். சில மதங்கள் கடவுள் ஒருவரே என்று நம்புகின்றன. வேறு சில மதங்களைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் பல கடவுள்களை வணங்குகின்றனர். சில மதங்களில் கடவுளைப் பல்வேறு வடிவங்களாக உருவகப்படுத்திச் சிலைகளை அமைத்து வழிபடுகின்றனர். வேறு சில சமயங்கள் சிலை வணக்கத்தை முற்றாக எதிர்க்கின்றன. கடவுளை இறைவன் அல்லது ஆண்டவன் எனவும் அழைக்கிறார்கள். கடவுள் நம்பிக்கையுடையவர்களின் எண்ணத்தின் படி, கடவுள் பிரபஞ்சத்தின் படைப்பாளியாகவும், பாதுகாப்பாளராகவும் இருக்கிறார். இயற்கையே கடவுள் என கூறுவோருக்கு கடவுள் பிரபஞ்சத்தின் படைப்பாளராக மட்டுமே இருக்கிறார். ஆனால், பிரபஞ்சத்தை காப்பாவராக அல்ல. கடவுள் அனைத்திலும் உள்ளதாவராய் இருக்கிறார் என்னும் கோட்பாடு உள்ளவர்களின் கருத்து கடவுளே தான் பிரபஞ்சம். நாத்திகத்தில், கடவுள் இருக்கிறார் என நம்பப்படுவதில்லை, கடவுள் தெரியாதவராகவோ அல்லது அறிய முடியாதவராகவோ கருதப்படுகிறார். பல குறிப்பிடத்தக்க தத்துவவாதிகள் கடவுளின் இருப்பிற்கும் இல்லையில் அதற்கு எதிராகவும் வாதங்களை உருவாக்கியுள்ளனர். கடவுளை அறிவதற்கான வழியில் மனித ஆன்மா கடந்து செல்லும் வெவ்வேறு படிகளாக ஒவ்வொரு மதமும் உள்ளன என்றும் எந்தப் படியும் அபாயகரமானதோ, தீமையானதோ அல்ல என்றும் வளர்வதற்கு மறுத்து முன்னேறாமல் கட்டுப்பெட்டியாக நின்றுவிடும் போதுதான் ஒரு மதம் அபாயகரமானதாகின்றது என்றும் சுவாமி விவேகானந்தர் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார். மதம் - மனிதன் கடவுள் நிலையை அடைவதற்கான வழியினை வாழ்ந்துகாட்டினார்கள் (இறைவன், ஆண்டவன், யோகிகள், ஞானிகள், மகான்கள்). இவர்களை பின்பற்றி வாழ்ந்த மக்கள் காலம் செல்ல செல்ல அவர்கள் கூறியதை "அனைவரும் ஒன்றே" என்பதை மறந்து மற்றவர்களிலிருந்து தங்களை வேறுபடுத்திக்காட்டப் பயன்படுத்த ஆரம்பித்தனர். இத்தகைய சிறப்புமிக்க ஆன்மிக உரை பற்றி பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் கு.ஞானசம்பந்தன் விரிவாக விவரிக்கிறார் கேட்டு மகிழுங்கள்.
