Common Sense was published anonymously by Thomas Paine in the year 1776. The book advocated independence from Great Britain to people in the Thirteen Colonies. Writing in clear and persuasive prose, Paine marshalled moral and political arguments to encourage common people in the Colonies to fight for egalitarian government. Thomas Paine also wrote The American Crisis, The Rights of Man, and The Age of Reason.
