#1 The wolf’s movement through the woods is effortless. His body appears to float over the long, almost spindly legs and the flicker of wrists, a bicycling drift through the trees. He is three years old and a male.

#2 The wolf was now late in the afternoon. He had stopped traveling, and had lain down to sleep under a rock outcropping. He began to waken. He rolled on his back and lay motionless with his front legs pointed toward the sky but folded like wilted flowers, his back legs splayed.

#3 The wolf is a species that has been studied by biologists enough to produce this picture of them. They were found in Europe, eastern Europe, the Near and Middle East, and northern India. They were also found in Afghanistan and northern India.

#4 The red wolf, a species of wolf found only in America, has been exterminated across its former range in the southeastern United States. A small population of perhaps one hundred survives in the swamp thickets of extreme southeastern Texas and adjacent Cameron Parish, Louisiana.
