#1 Samsara is like an ocean, and we are constantly tossed up and down by our thoughts and emotions. We need a boat to cross the ocean of samsara, and that boat is the Dharma.

#2 We are all born with the ability to think for ourselves, and with that comes the freedom to read and learn about anything we want. It is important not to get distracted by extraneous things, but to remember why we are here on this planet and what makes our human birth so precious.

#3 We must listen to the teachings, reflect on them, and meditate on them. We must not just take in information, but digest it and understand it. If we have any doubts, we do not have to believe blindly.

#4 Buddhism is about enlightened common sense. We must study to understand what we are trying to do, then really think through the practice so that we understand it, and then incorporate it into our lives.
