The Cost: Navigating Corruption and Ambition in Early 20th Century America David Graham Phillips
Two men from an Indiana town: one goes to Wall Street and gets everything, the other stays and does not — and the woman between them pays the bill. Phillips was the muckraker whose Treason of the Senate so enraged Roosevelt that the President coined the word to insult him, and he was shot dead in the street at forty-three. The finance in this 1904 novel is technically exact, which is why it still bites.
