The Ginger Cat

A young woman is uncertain whom to trust when a killer strikes in a cozy English village in this classic mystery from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. "This colorful thriller has pace and plenty of melodramatic atmosphere. . . . Possesses considerable dash and vigor and enough authority and style to make it worth your while." —The New York Times Judith Trevenna lives a relatively tranquil life at Number 8 of the Cathedral Close in the sleepy English village of Carchester. With her glowing red hair and athletic frame, the twenty-one-year-old sticks out among the locals, who have nicknamed her "the Ginger Cat." When Judith isn't tending to her widowed mother at home, she often goes on adventures with her small terrier, Hornet. They hike on the moors and punt along the river. She is even a budding writer. But soon she must take on the mantle of sleuth . . . Judith and her mother welcome a trio of guests. First, there's Judith's stepsister Blanche Severnake and her boss, the novelist Sarah Chetwoode, who needs some country air to calm her nerves. Then there's strange cousin Boris, who will only travel under the cover of night to avoid spies and assassins . . . or so he says. When news of murder and a jewel heist in Paris comes up during tea, it seems like nothing more than idle gossip. But soon Judith hears talk of satanic cults, and more murder follows. Very deadly business has come to Number 8, and it's up to Judith to clean house… Originally published in 1929.
