An Account of My Journey to England

This travelogue is a revealing account of England in the middle of the Industrial Age over a century and a half ago, as viewed by the author from a nation then colonized by Britain. It highlights the profound and, in some ways, seemingly unbridgeable chasm between Britain—molded by over a century of almost galloping growth in science, technology, and manufacturing—and the barely touched people of his home region of Gujarat in western India. The author’s perceptions on the virtues of democratic social norms in England and the contrasting behavior of British officers in India are intertwined with passion, curiosity, and ethical convictions.
