It occurs when one party takes unfair advantage of another for personal or institutional gain, frequently at the expense of the exploited party’s well-being. While exploitation can be overt and aggressive, it is often subtle and embedded within social, economic, and political structures, making it difficult to recognize and address. This is particularly evident in labor markets, where workers may accept unfair wages and poor conditions due to a lack of viable alternatives.
