GitHub for Agentic Development: Use Issues, Pull Requests, Actions, Reviews, Branches, and AI Coding Agents to Run Software Projects

A few years ago the hard part of running a software project was coordinating people, and today a new kind of teammate has joined the project. It does not sleep, it does not get bored by repetitive tasks, and it can open a pull request faster than you can finish your coffee, and learning to work with it well is the difference between a project that accelerates and one that quietly drowns in low quality automation. Whatever brought you here, you share a conviction this book was written to honor: that GitHub is no longer just a place to store code, and that it is the control room for a mixed team of humans and agents.

This book is not a tour of every GitHub feature, not a prompt engineering manual, and not a theoretical treatment of artificial intelligence. What you actually need is an operating system for running a software project when part of your team is made of software agents, and that operating system is exactly what the pages ahead deliver.

Inside, you will discover: • The new software team, and how to treat the agent like a tireless junior engineer • Setting up your repository so agents can actually understand it • Writing issues that agents can solve, with acceptance criteria that matter • Branches, pull requests, and the integration strategy that keeps the trunk clean • GitHub Actions as your quality gate, and branch protection that enforces it • Putting the coding agent in the loop, and reviewing AI generated code well • Security, secrets, daily operation, and the measurement that improves the workflow

The core idea is simple: issues become the contract for work, pull requests become the place where human judgment meets machine output, Actions becomes the automated gate, and review becomes the discipline that keeps everything trustworthy. The most important habit is to treat the agent like a brilliant, tireless, and commonsense-lacking junior colleague, and to give it a clear assignment, a protected branch, a suite of checks, and a senior reviewer.
