The Asylum and the Outlaws: To populate his new city, Romulus opens Rome as an asylum for fugitives, outlaws, and runaway slaves, creating a rough and fiercely loyal community. The Rape of the Sabine Women: Abbott explores the famous conflict where the early Romans, lacking wives, abduct women from the neighboring Sabine tribe during a festival, which leads to a massive war. The Union and the Disappearance: The book finishes with the peace treaty that united the Romans and Sabines under joint rule, Romulus's long reign, and his mysterious disappearance during a violent storm, leading Romans to believe he ascended to heaven as the god Quirinus.
