Sir William Wallace (Annotated): Enriched Edition. A Historical Biography of Scotland's National Hero in the Wars of Independence

Sir William Wallace presents a compact yet searching account of Scotland's great national champion, tracing Wallace's rise from obscure laird to military leader, guardian of the realm, fugitive, and martyr. Murison writes in the late-Victorian tradition of documentary patriotism: respectful of legend, especially Blind Harry's powerful afterlife, yet attentive to charters, chronicles, legal records, and the political realities of the Wars of Independence. The result is a lucid historical portrait set within the wider struggle between Scottish kingship, English overlordship, and medieval ideas of lawful resistance. Alexander Falconer Murison, a Scottish scholar, jurist, and man of letters, was well equipped to treat Wallace not merely as a romantic hero but as a figure embedded in law, sovereignty, and national memory. His professional interest in legal institutions and historical evidence informs the book's measured tone, while his Scottish cultural milieu helps explain its sympathy for Wallace as an emblem of civic courage and communal freedom. This book is recommended to readers seeking an accessible, intelligent introduction to Wallace before turning to larger academic studies. It will especially reward those interested in Scottish history, medieval politics, and the transformation of a historical actor into a national symbol.
