#2 I was afraid of the cold, so I took an outdoor swim in one of the coldest days of the year. I was not afraid of the cold, but I was afraid of doing things that would get me arrested. I was going to spend January picking up the phone.

#3 The author’s friend Rachel agreed to go swimming with her in the freezing cold pond. It was over very quickly, but the experience was beautiful. She felt alive, and the world felt full of possibility.
