#1 I was a typical American girl, interested in what I should wear to school rather than what I might learn there. I had no idea how much my life would change when I became a pen pal with a girl in Zimbabwe.

#3 I was always excited to come home and tell my mom about my pen pal. She knew all of our neighbors, and I would often find her sitting at the kitchen table reading the newspaper.

#4 I learned that Zimbabwe was liberated from the United Kingdom in 1980. I was beginning to see parallels between the Africans and American colonists: they wanted to be free from British rule.
