Summary of Natasha Solomons's I, Mona Lisa

#1 Leonardo was a beautiful man at 51. He wore a short, rose-colored tunic and a cloak of deepest green velvet, which was given to him by Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. He visited the barber regularly and his cheeks were smooth.

#2 Leonardo’s studio is always cool, but Lisa constantly needs to have a fire lit. She is always searching for something, but she doesn’t like me. Leonardo is more diplomatic, and he tries to explain to her that a painting is visual poetry.

#3 I am not like the other artists who have come before me, who glance demurely at the floor or their clasped hands. I am a revolutionary, and I will change the world, but only for those who wish to see.

#4 When Leonardo was drawing my hands, he was constantly making adjustments to the angles of my fingers. He was also drawing and redrawing Niccolò Machiavelli’s hands.
