#1 Barton was shocked to hear that he was being fired. He had done a good job as the company grew, and he was likely to be promoted to chief operating officer. But when he heard what Williams had to offer, his first inclination was to think he was being fired.

#2 After a difficult process, the board decided that Barton should be the company’s new chief information officer. He was one of the company’s most outspoken critics, but the board believed he had good ideas on how IT should be run.
