#1 My dad was a polymath who spoke eight languages and was president of Swarthmore College. He was fluent in the histories of India, Pakistan, and China. My mom was a missionary with a missionary temperament.

#2 I asked my dad what he thought he was best at, and he said listening. I asked Timmie what he thought he was best at, and he said listening.

#3 As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself turning to Timmie and Day more and more. They’ve become sort of de facto parents to me.

#4 Our brother, Pier, the middle child, doesn't use our shorthand. He's a six-foot-five dog lover who is athletic and equable. He doesn't fret about having leukemia because he is determined to be a stoic, and he doesn't fret about failing to be a stoic because he doesn't always remember that that's what he's supposed to be.
