The House with the Mezzanine by Anton Chekhov is a short story that tells the story of a family who moves into a new house and discovers a mezzanine that they had no idea was there. The mother is excited about the new space, but the father is not sure what to make of it. The story follows the family as they use the mezzanine for different purposes and come to love it.
