Taking responsibility for our feelings, and the reactions that come with them, is an important skill to practice. It is especially important for having healthy relationships, or when we’re in a situation that makes us experience big feelings, like anger or sadness. It’s okay if we don’t react in the best way. We can use that interaction as a lesson to do better next time. We can remember to take time to reflect and regulate our emotions before reacting.

Being an active listener means that we’re absorbing what others say with respect, interest, and open-mindedness. There are many ways to practice being attentive, like making eye contact or asking questions. Being an active listener is not only kind, but it can build the relationships we have with others.
