It is not known who wrote the Book of Nehemiah. However, it is written in the first-person narrative style, which seems to suggest that at least parts of the book were written by Nehemiah himself. Nehemiah was a cupbearer for King Artaxerxes of Persia. On a particular day, he broke down before the king and mentioned how Jerusalem had been destroyed. The king ordered him to go back and build the walls around the city. He was also given supplies and an armed escort. As Nehemiah began to build the walls with his team, there was fierce opposition from the countries surrounding Jerusalem. He faced constant threats. However, he prayed to God and kept at his job. After many months, the walls were built and then he organized a huge celebration to mark the occasion. However, as he began to go around the city, he noticed that the people had begun to sway from the law of the Torah, being negligent in caring for the temple and indulging in commerce during Sabbath. He tried to counsel and motivate the people to little avail. In essence, this book is about having faith and following one's God-given inspiration and staying with a noble task at hand until it is complete.
