१८८५ तमे वर्षे नेल्सन् नाम्नः कश्चन निवृत्तः सेनाधिकारी यदा वायुविहारार्थं गतवान् तदा समुत्पन्नेन चक्रवातेन तस्य शिरस्त्रं वायुना नीतम् । चक्रवातबाधाम् उपेक्ष्य शिरस्त्रम् आनीय दत्तवत्यै पुष्पानामिकायै बालिकायै सः सेनाधिकारी कृतज्ञतां समर्प्य, तस्याः‌ नामसङ्केतादिकं स्वीये लघुपुस्तके लिखित्वा ततः निर्गतः। अनन्तरं यदा पुष्पायाः पतिः प्लेग्रोगेण ग्रस्तः असीत् तदा चिकित्सालये कश्चन वैद्याधिकारी तस्याः नाम ज्ञात्वा, तां घटनां वदति । सः एव तस्य सेनाधिकारिणः पुत्रः यः पुष्पायाः पत्युः चिकित्सार्थं समुचितां व्यवस्थाम् अकरोत् । कदाचित् कृतः अल्पः उपकारः महत् एव फलं ददाति ।

In the year 1885, while a retired military commander named Nelson was walking in the garden, his hat was carried away by a whirlwind. A young girl, ignoring the risk, brought the hat back and gave it to him. The commander, feeling grateful, wrote down her name in a small book and left. A few years later, when the girl’s husband was suffering from plague, the doctor who was treating him asked for the girl’s name and recalled the incident. The doctor was none other than the commander’s son, who later treated her husband with the utmost care. Even the slightest act of help and kindness can yield great results.

अल्पोपि उपकारः भवेत् महते फलाय

सङ्गीतक्षेत्रे करीमखानवर्यः सुविख्यातः । एकलव्यः इव कश्चन युवकः करीमखानवर्यस्य ध्वनिमुद्रिकां श्रावं श्रावं सङ्गीताभ्यासं करोति स्म । अग्रे करीमखानवर्येण मिलित्वा, 'सम्यक् अभ्यासं कृत्वा प्रगतिं ख्यातिं च प्राप्नुहि' इति आशीर्वादं प्राप्तवान् । सः एव कुन्दनलालसेहगलवर्यः यः भाविनि काले चलनचित्रगायकत्वेन चित्रनटत्वेन च ख्यातः अभवत् ।

Kareem Khan was one of the renowned singers in the world of music. Like Ekalavya, a young boy used to listen to Kareem Khan’s recordings and practice with great effort. One day, when he met Kareem Khan, he received his blessings. This very boy was Kundan Lal, who later became famous as a playback singer and an actor.

अपूर्व: अभ्यासक्रमः

कस्यचित् राज्ञः समीपे केनचित् तपस्विना दत्तः कश्चन विशिष्टः खड्गः असीत् येन सः सर्वेषु अपि युद्धेषु जयं लभते स्म । कदाचित् कश्चन असूयापरः राक्षसः निद्रासमये तं खड्गं चोरयित्वा राजानं कारागृहे स्थापयति । स्वप्ने काचित् देवी द्विवारम् आगत्य वरं ददाति येन आगामिषु दिनेषु सः पुनरपि राज्यं प्राप्नोति । तदा देवी प्रत्यक्षीभूय – 'इतः परं खड्गः युद्धाय न, अपि तु शान्तिपालनाय उपयोक्तव्यः' इति उक्त्वा अदृश्या भवति । एतत् अङ्गीकुर्वन् राजा युद्धचिन्तनं पूर्णतः परित्यज्य देशहितकार्ये निरतः अभवत् ।

Once, a sage gave a powerful sword to a king, with which he won all his wars. However, a jealous demon stole the sword while the king was asleep and put him in the jail. Two times, a goddess appeared in the king's dreams and granted him boons with which he could regain his lost kingdom. Later, the goddess appeared and said, ‘From now on, the sword should be used only for maintaining peace, not for war.’ Accepting this, the king fully devoted himself to the welfare of his people and his kingdom.

वरद्वयम्

एकदा धारायाः अधिपतेः भोजस्य सभायां दूरदेशात् कश्चन पण्डितः आगत्य एकां समस्यां प्रस्तुतवान् । किन्तु पण्डितेषु श्रेष्ठः वाग्विभूषणः अपि उत्तरं दातुं न शक्तवान् । अतिथिपण्डितेन सप्ताहं यावत् समयः दत्तः । तावता श्रेष्ठः पण्डितः वाग्विभूषणः समस्यायाः परिहारं स्वयमेव अन्विषति उत अन्येन उत्तरं प्राप्यते ? कः सः प्रश्नः? तस्य उत्तरं किं भवितुम् अर्हति? इति सर्वैः कथां श्रुत्वा ज्ञायताम् ।

Once, a scholar from a distant land came to King Bhoja's palace and presented a riddle. Since none of the king’s scholars were able to answer, the scholar gave them a week's time to find the solution. कुटिलः कूपः

केनचित् कृषिकेन कश्चन सज्जनः चक्रावाततः रक्षितः । प्राणापायमपि अविगणय्य रक्षणरूपम् उपकारं कृतवतः कृषिकस्य परोपकारस्वभावं दृष्ट्वा सः सज्जनः पारितोषिकं दातुम् इच्छति । 'अपाये स्थितवतः रक्षणं मानवधर्मः । तत् कर्तव्यबुद्ध्या मया कृतं, न तु पारितोषिकेच्छया' इति उक्त्वा पारितोषिकं निराकरोति सः कृषकः । एतादृशानां जनानां कारणात् एव लोके वृष्ट्यादयः भवन्ति इति मनसि एव चिन्तयति सः सज्जनः ।

Once, a farmer rescued a person from a whirlwind, risking his own life. Grateful for the help, the person wanted to reward the farmer. However, the farmer humbly declined, saying, "Helping the needy is the duty of every human being. With that principle in mind, I helped you, not for the sake of a reward. This story emphasizes the idea that helping others is a moral responsibility and should not be motivated by the desire for personal gain.

उपकारः तु स्वभावः

कस्मिंश्चित् ग्रामे कश्चन वणिक् धनिकात् स्वीकृतम् ऋणं प्रत्यर्पयितुम् अशक्तः अभवत् । सः धनिकः वृद्धः क्रूरः च वणिक्कन्यां वञ्चनया परिणेतुम् इच्छति । परन्तु, सा दक्षा कन्या उपायेन व्यवहृत्य अपायं निवार्य, पितरम् अपि ऋणात् कथं रक्षितवती इति अनया कथया जानीमः । अतः विवेकः एव सर्वत्र जयति ।

Once, a merchant who had taken a loan from a wealthy person, failed to repay it. The greedy wealthy person, wanted to marry his daughter through deceit. But let us hear how the clever daughter acted wisely and saved both herself and her father from the control of the wealthy man. Hence, wisdom prevails everywhere

विवेकः जयति सर्वदा

कदाचित् बौद्धविहारे भगवता बुद्धेन ज्ञातं यत् शिष्याः सर्वदा ध्यानमग्नाः सन्तः ज्वरग्रस्तं शिष्यम् उपेक्षितवन्तः इति ।तदा तान् सर्वान् आहूय - केवलं ध्यानमार्गेण गमनेन न प्रयोजनम्, दीनसेवादिभ्यः एव मार्गस्य शुद्धिः भवति, मार्गस्य अनुसरणं यावत् मुख्यं भवति, मार्गस्य शुद्धता अपि तावती एव मुख्या इति बोधयति ।

Once, in a Buddhist monastery, Lord Buddha learnt that the disciples were always engrossed in meditation and overlooked a disciple suffering from fever. Then, Lord Buddha gathered them and enlightened them saying - : 'Simply following the path of meditation is not sufficient. Purity of the path is attained only through acts of humble service and similar deeds. Both meditation and compassionate service are integral components of spiritual practice and so on’.

मार्गस्य शुद्धता

शान्तियुतं जीवनं कर्तुम् इच्छन् राजा शान्तियुतजीवनस्य मार्गं ज्ञात्वा आगच्छन्तु इति भटान् प्रेषयति । कञ्चन तेजस्विनं सन्यासिनं दृष्ट्वा अपेक्षायाम् उक्तायां 'शान्तिमार्गः अन्तरङ्गे भवति' इति संन्यासी वदति । परन्तु राजा स्वयमेव आगत्य विनयेन वचनस्य तात्पर्यं पृच्छति । तदा शान्तिमार्गस्य अन्वेषणम्, अन्तरङ्शोधनस्य सोपानानि इत्यादीनि विस्तरेण विवृणोति संन्यासी ।

Desiring to live a peaceful life, the king, sent soldiers to find a path from great souls. Upon meeting a radiant sage, the king’s messenger inquired about the king’s wish. The sage replied, "The path to peace lies within the heart." However, the king himself went to the sage and, with humility, when inquired about the inner meaning, the sage then explained in detail how to seek the path of peace and necessary steps for inner purification.

शान्तिप्राप्तेः मार्गः

काचन निर्धना माता पुत्रजननसमये धात्रै दत्तं वाक्यं पालयितुम्, पञ्चवर्षाणि पश्चात् सर्वमपि धनं यत् पुत्रेण प्राप्तं तत् सर्वं धात्रै अर्पयति। निर्धनमहिलायाः वचनपरिपालकतां निर्लोलुपतां च दृष्ट्वा सा धात्री तेन धनेन एकं कासारं निर्मितवती । अयं कासारः अद्यापि दरभङ्गानगरे 'धात्रीकासार' नाम्ना ख्यातः । सः बालकः भाविनि काले 'शङ्करमिश्र' नाम्ना ख्यातः, न्यायशास्त्रक्षेत्रे च महती ख्यातिः विद्यते ।

A poor mother made a promise to the midwife duirng childbirth. To keep up to the promise, five years later, when the child earned wealth, she gave it all to the midwife. Seeing the poor mother’s commitment to her word and her selflessness, the midwife used the money to build a pond. This pond, known as "Dhatrikasara," is still famous in Darbhanga today. The boy, in due course, became renowned as "Shankara Mishra" and gained great fame in the field of law.

वचनपरिपालनम्

जीवनं नाम किम् इति जिज्ञासुः कश्चन जनः सर्वत्र परिभ्रमन् अरण्यं प्रविष्टवान् । तत्र जीवनविषये पृष्टे सति शुकः, शशः, हरिणः, नदी, वृक्षः, बीजः, उलूकः च स्वाभिप्रायम् प्रकटयन्ति । अनन्तरं तेन कश्चन संन्यासी दृष्टः । ततः ज्ञातवान् यत् केवलम् अन्वेषणेन जीवनं यापयितुम् अवसरः न प्राप्यते । आदौ उत्तमं जीवनं करणीयम् । सदाचरणमेव जीवनम् इति ।

A curious person, wanting to know what life is, wandered everywhere and entered a forest. There, when he asked about life, a parrot, a rabbit, a deer, a river, a tree, a seed, and an owl all shared their opinions. After this, he met a wise sage who explained, that one must lead a good life first instead of simply searching for the life’s meaning. Living a life of virtue is what life truly means.

सदाचरणमेव जीवनम्

इङ्ग्लेण्ड्देशे केण्ट्नामकस्य प्रदेशस्य समुद्रतीरे महतः चण्डमारुतस्य कारणेन काचन बृहती नौका पीड्यमाना नुद्यमाना भग्नप्राया अभवत् । समुद्रतीरस्य जनसम्मर्दे केनचित् महनीयेन सह पालितः कश्चन बलशाली अप्रतिमशूरः धीरश्च शुनकः आसीत् । शुनकस्य स्वामी किञ्चित् चिन्तयित्वा नौकारक्षणाय एकम् उपायं कृत्वा शुनकं प्रेषयति । शुनकस्य साहाय्येन सर्वे नाविकाः तीरं प्राप्नुवन्ति । कथम् इति जिज्ञासया कथां शृणुमः ।

In the country of England, at a place called Kent, a large ship was severely damaged and almost destroyed due to a great storm. On the shore, there was a powerful and brave dog. After thinking for a while, the dog's owner devised a plan to save the ship and sent the dog for help. With the dog's assistance, all the sailors were able to reach the shore safely.
