कर्मफलं कर्तारम् उपैति

कर्मफलं कर्तारम् उपैतिकर्ममीमांसायां पारङ्गताः दश पण्डिताः यदा ग्रामान्तरं गन्तुं उद्युक्ताः तदा मार्गमध्ये अशनियुक्ता महावृष्टिः आरब्धा । जन्मान्तरे कृतं पापमेव अशनिवृष्ट्यादिपीडायाः कारणं इति विचिन्त्य - 'एकैकः मण्डपात् बहिः गत्वा तिष्ठेत् । यः महापापी स्यात् तस्य उपरि अशनिः पतत्येव' इति तैः निश्चितम् । नवानां जनानां पर्यायः समाप्तश्चेदपि अशनिपातः न अभवत् । दशमः एव महापापी स्यात् इति विचिन्त्य तं यावता मण्डपात् बहिः प्रक्षिप्तवन्तः तावता महान् अशनिपातः मण्डपस्य उपरि अपतत्, नव पण्डिताः अपि मरणं प्राप्नुवनतः च । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”) Ten scholars, experts in the field of Karma Mimamsa, were on their way to another village when a heavy thunderstorm suddenly began in the middle of the forest. Believing that the suffering caused by the thunderstorm was the result of sins committed in past lives, they thought, "Let each of us step out of the shelter. The one who is the greatest sinner will have the thunderbolt strike him." When none of the nine scholars were affected by the thunderbolt, they concluded that the tenth must be the greatest sinner. Based on this conclusion, they made him step outside, and immediately a thunderbolt struck his shelter. The nine scholars, however, met with death.
