पूज्यः वृक्षः

पूर्वं सुमात्राद्वीपे वृद्धः तपस्वी कश्चन गुहायामेव तपः आचरन् ग्रामतः आगतानां कृषिकाणां मार्गदर्शनं करोति स्म । अन्ये असूयपराः तपस्विनः एकदा यदा वृद्धं तपस्विनं मारयितुं प्रयतन्ते, तदा कश्चन महान् सर्पः आकाशात् पतित्वा रक्षति । अपरक्षणॆ प्रसारितफणातः उद्भूताभिः शाखाभिः कश्चन वृक्षः प्रत्यक्षः भवति । पश्चात्तापम् अनुभवन्तः तपस्विनः - अस्मासु कश्चित् भवन्तं पीडयेत् चेत् अस्य वृक्षस्य शाखा खड्गः भूत्वा तं मारयेत् इति अकथयन् । ततः आरभ्य तज्जातीयवृक्षस्य शाखा एव परशोः दण्डत्वेन उपयुज्यते लोके । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

Once, on the island of Sumatra, an elderly sage who usually lived in caves, practised intense penance would guide the village farmers. Other jealous sages once when tried to kill him, a large serpant fell from the sky protecting him. Later, branches started emerging from the serpant’s hood and a tree became visible in its place. Realizing their mistake, the sages told – ‘If anyone tries to harm the elderly sage, then let the branches of this tree turn into a sword and kill him’. Hencefoth, the branches of that tree were used as swords in the world.
