प्रजासु अविद्यमानासु क्व राजत्वम्

विकृतवर्मा नाम कश्चन राजा स्वविषये प्रजामतं ज्ञातुम् इच्छन् वेषान्तरं धृत्वा देशपर्यटनं कृतवान् । तदा सर्वत्रापि तस्य विषये असमाधानम् अस्ति इति तेन ज्ञातम्। तेन कुपितः राजा राज्ये विद्यमानानां सर्वेषां मरणदण्डनं घोषितवान् ।अत्रान्तरे आगतः कश्चन संन्यासी - राज्ये जनेषु सुखेन असत्सु कथं महाराजत्वेन तिष्ठति भवान् इति उपदिशति । ततः स्वदोषं जानन् महाराजः राज्यस्य अभिवृद्ध्यर्थम् अहर्निशं कार्यं करोति । (“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

Once, a king named Vikritavarma wanted to know people’s opinion about him. Disguising himself, he travelled everywhere and learnt that the people were unhappy. The furious King, ordered death penalty for all the people in his kingdom. Just then a sage arrived and said – ‘The people are not happy. Without people, how can a king remain in power?’. Realizing his mistake, the King devoted himself to working day and night for his people."
