Alfred Nobel (October 21, 1833 – December 10, 1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, and philanthropist best known for inventing dynamite and for establishing the Nobel Prizes.  Nobel is credited with inventing dynamite in 1867, which was a safer and more stable explosive compared to the nitroglycerin that was commonly used at the time. Dynamite had a wide range of applications, from construction and mining to warfare. Nobel held more than 350 patents for his inventions.

The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, were American aviation pioneers who are credited with inventing, building, and flying the world's first successful airplane. Their historic achievements in aviation marked a significant turning point in the history of transportation and technology.
 Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 – January 30, 1948) and Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 – May 30, 1912) were born in Dayton, Ohio. They shared a strong interest in mechanics and aviation from a young age. The brothers conducted extensive research, experimentation, and testing to understand the principles of flight and develop a functional aircraft.
 After years of studying the flight of birds and experimenting with various designs, the Wright brothers successfully achieved powered flight on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Their aircraft, known as the Wright Flyer, was a biplane with a wingspan of 40 feet and a weight of around 600 pounds. Orville piloted the first flight, covering a distance of 120 feet in 12 seconds.

In 1901, he successfully transmitted the letter "S" in Morse code from Poldhu, Cornwall, England, to St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, marking the first transatlantic wireless signal.

Between 1947 and 1971, he built a thriving pharmaceutical business, conducted research into cosmic rays, set up India's first textile research cooperative, ATIRA, the first market research organization, ORG, the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and the dance academy Darpana. The list of discoveries made by Marie Curie goes on and on, not the least of which it was the discoveries of Marie Curie of nuclear fission that made the Atomic Bomb and other nuclear weapons possible. Marie Curie suffered from a form of discrimination experienced by almost all women of academic accomplishment. Her discoveries were not taken seriously or were often credited to some man in her background. Marie Curie

Nicolaus Copernicus (19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance-era mathematician and astronomer who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than the Earth at the center of the universe, in all likelihood independently of Aristarchus of Samos, who had formulated such a model some eighteen centuries earlier.The publication of Copernicus' model in his book 'On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres', just before his death in 1543, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution.Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia, a region that had been part of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466. A polyglot and polymath, he obtained a doctorate in canon law and was also a mathematician, astronomer, physician, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat, and economist. In 1517 he derived a quantity theory of money—a key concept in economics—and in 1519 he formulated an economic principle that later came to be called 'Gresham's law'.

He was best known to the general public for inventing a method to stop milk and wine from causing sickness, a process that came to be called pasteurization. He is regarded as one of the three main founders of microbiology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch. Pasteur also made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, most notably the molecular basis for the asymmetry of certain crystals. His body lies beneath the Institute Pasteur in Paris in a spectacular vault covered in depictions of his accomplishments in Byzantine mosaics.

Louis Pasteur - from the pastured morning milk to becoming the founder of microbiology

In 1913, a young unschooled Indian clerk wrote a letter to G H Hardy, begging the preeminent English mathematician's opinion on several ideas he had about numbers. Realizing the letter was the work of a genius, Hardy arranged for Srinivasa Ramanujan to come to England.
 Thus began one of the most improbable and productive collaborations ever chronicled. Devout Hindu Ramanujan, "the Prince of Intuition," tested his brilliant theories alongside the sophisticated and eccentric Hardy, "the Apostle of Proof."
 In time, Ramanujan's creative intensity took its toll: he died at the age of thirty-two, but left behind a magical and inspired legacy that is still being plumbed for its secrets today.
