The date is 30 January, 1948. A little over five months have passed since India's independence from the British Raj. As the sun sets, the air is electric in Delhi's Birla House.

The reason - Mahatma Gandhi is about to address a prayer meeting. Gandhi walks to the stage from his room, supported by Manuben and Abha, his two grand-nieces.

As he nears the stage, a man wearing khaki breaks loose from the crowd and kneels before them. Manuben says, “Bapu is already late. Why do you embarrass him?”

But the words have barely left her mouth, when three deafening gunshots ring out. Gandhi falls to the floor. Three bullets finding their mark in his torso. The crowd goes numb, for a moment. And then erupts.

The assassin surrenders and asks for the police. He's arrested and taken away.

Moments later a doctor confirms that Mahatma Gandhi is dead.

The assassin's name would be remembered forever in history - Nathuram Godse, the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

This is a special podcast about the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, and the man who pulled the trigger - Nathuram Godse. Godse was hanged to death on 15 November 1949. The reasons that drove him to assassinate Gandhi have often been misunderstood or plainly misrepresented.

I sat down with Anup Sardesai, the author of Nathuram Godse: The Untold Truth to understand the other side of the story. What happened to him and his family after the assassination? Why did he kill the father of the nation?

Former Union Minister Arun Shourie, while responding to latest reports about the Centre waiving anti-corruption provisions in the Rafale deal, said that the uncovered facts expose “the lies of the PM and his minions, and of the captive media that has been broadcasting them. They put to shame the media, which, out of supposed neutrality has not been pursuing this investigation.”

Some weeks ago, I participated in an internationally-acclaimed conference attended by delegates from all over the world. The curator of the conference boasted that forty percent of the delegates were women. (I’m not sure what technicalities prevented full gender parity.) One of the side events was a panel on #MeToo, which I wanted to attend in part because I have been an active contributor to the #MeToo movement in academia and because the panel’s organisation intrigued me.

The Congress symbol in those days was the cow and the calf. The young man was Sanjay Gandhi, son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Till last week it was the sniping war at the LoC which was live, with casualties on both the sides. Even as we were discussing the new Indian Army sniper rifles under induction, it was certain that a change in character of the proxy war in Kashmir would take place sooner than later. Pakistan’s deep state masterminding the actions of terrorists in the Valley had already experimented with targeting of local policemen and soldiers on leave.

For long, analysts were anticipating the return of one of the most effective weapons of sub-conventional conflicts: the improvised explosive device or the IED and its derivative, the car bomb. It returned in Pulwama with the addition of an even more potent weapon, the suicide bomber.

What Does the Return of IED Attacks in Kashmir Mean for the Army?

The media has given saturated coverage to the Pulwama terrorist attack. This is not unnatural because it was the deadliest single action against the security forces in almost three decades of Pakistani sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. 

But the way the media is running the terrorist action once again raises the question of how such grievous actions should be covered. Are there golden rules that should ideally be observed while reporting such events and in commentaries, including talk shows? And are these being observed in the constant flow of “Breaking News” on TV and updates in newspapers and digital news websites?

Covering Pulwama Attack: Has the Indian Media Acted Responsibly?

The suicide bomb attack that killed around 40 CRPF jawans in Pulwama is easily one of the most serious attacks the security forces have faced in Jammu & Kashmir since the beginning of insurgency in 1990.

Comparisons are being made with the J&K Legislative Assembly attack in 2001 that led to the killing of 38 people. Both attacks seem to have used the same modus operandi – having a suicide bomber ram an SUV loaded with explosives on to the target.
