Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It is known for its ability to progress through different stages, each with distinct symptoms, and if left untreated, it can lead to severe complications affecting various organ systems. The history of syphilis dates back to ancient times, although its precise origins remain debated. It was first documented in Europe during the late 15th century, likely brought by sailors returning from the New World. Over time, syphilis became a global public health concern, and efforts to control the disease have spanned centuries. In the early 20th century, the development of penicillin revolutionized the treatment of syphilis, dramatically reducing its impact.

Syphilis is primarily transmitted through direct contact with syphilitic sores, known as chancres, which typically appear in the genital, anal, or oral areas. It can also be transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth, resulting in congenital syphilis, a severe form of the disease. While syphilis is most commonly spread through sexual activity, it is also possible, though rarer, to contract it through non-sexual means, such as sharing needles or close physical contact with an infected person’s blood. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to preventing the disease from progressing through its stages and causing irreversible damage to organs like the heart, brain, and nerves.
