Ephesus, once one of the most important cities in the ancient world, holds a unique place in both Greek and Roman history. The city’s influence on the early Christian world is further cemented by its role in the Third Ecumenical Council in 431 CE, which addressed critical theological issues of the time. Ephesus was also home to one of the earliest Christian communities, and the city was believed to have been the final residence of the Virgin Mary, who, according to tradition, lived there in her later years.
