Le Colonel Chabert

"Le Colonel Chabert" is a novella by Honoré de Balzac, part of his vast series of works entitled "La Comédie Humaine." Published in 1832, this story is set against the backdrop of post-Napoleonic France and centers on Colonel Chabert, a war hero believed dead in the Battle of Eylau. The novella begins with Chabert returning to Paris to reclaim his identity, his wife, and his fortune, only to find that the world has moved on without him. His wife, having remarried and established a new life, denies his identity, and Chabert struggles to regain his legal and social standing.

The narrative delves into themes of identity, social injustice, and the bureaucratic absurdities of the French legal system. Balzac masterfully portrays the plight of an individual lost amidst the societal changes following the upheaval of war. "Le Colonel Chabert" is not just a poignant character study but also a critique of the societal norms and legal systems of the time, showcasing Balzac's skill in capturing the complexities of human nature and social structures.
