#1 I had many childhood fantasies of being a spy or a scout, and I often dreamed of fighting with my klompen. I would often pass the Whetstra family house, and I would imagine them getting mad and throwing glass shards at me.

#2 I had a brother, Ben, who was a master swapper. He would take the pennies I earned doing chores for the burgomaster and turn them into German currency. I would then turn the money in at the police station, claiming it as my own.

#3 I loved my little brother Bas more than anything in the world. He could not talk or even dress himself, but he had a strange and remarkable talent. He would crawl underneath the keyboard and crouch out of the way of Papa’s feet as he played.

#4 Witte is a small village in Holland, and like all villages in the polders, it is built along a dike. The houses are virtual islands, and the two churches are at either end of town.
