With dazzling wit and astonishing insight, Bill Bryson—the acclaimed author of The Lost Continent—brilliantly explores the remarkable history, eccentricities, resilience and sheer fun of the English language. From the first descent of the larynx into the throat (why you can talk but your dog can't), to the fine lost art of swearing, Bryson tells the fascinating, often uproarious story of an inadequate, second-rate tongue of peasants that developed into one of the world's largest growth industries.

Very informative and interesting, but if one wishes to get all the provided information, may become frustrated in some parts of it. Though read really nicely by S. McLaughlin, in several occasions he had to spell (long) words with differences in a letter or two which was almost impossible to follow. On the other hand he was very good in reading different pronunciations of similar or same spellings that I wouldn’t manage to think by reading symbols… so I am glad all in all that I heard the book, and if I find a hard copy I may read it too!
