The Sikh Gurus incorporated not only their own sacred poetry, but also included the poems of another 30 saints from different religions, places and times. These songs are set to 31 different musical scales, called ragas, that evoke the feelings of different times of day, different emotions and the seasons of the year.

The Guru Granth Sahib is now considered to be the "perpetual Guru" as there are no longer individual gurus who head the Sikh tradition. The sacred poetry and teachings contained in the Guru Granth Sahib are the final authority in Sikh spirituality and tradition.

The English translation of the original text is by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa, except for the opening verses known as “Japji Sahib” which have been translated by Guruka Singh Khalsa.
