Fascinating, subjective and personal account of an 19th century laudanum addict. The author was a scholar and his writing is sometimes pompous and full of digressions, but some will find it enjoyable in an odd way. Some parts may be boring, still. Absolutely gorgeous description of drug-fueled loitering around London from the times of Napoleonic wars. Strikingly clever comparison of effects of opium and alcohol. The description of the horrors of withdrawal are somewhat obscure, the author seems to beat about the bushes unlike when praising the joys of the earlier phase.
