في هذه الرواية نعود مع الكاتب والروائي المصري بهاء طاهر إلى نهايات القرن التاسع عشر، وبداية الاحتلال البريطانى لمصر حيث يُرسل ضابط البوليس المصري محمود عبدالظاهر، والذى كان يعيش حياة لاهية بين الحانات وبنات الليل، إلى واحة سيوة لشك السلطات فى تعاطفه مع الأفكار الثورية لجمال الدين الأفغاني وأحمد عرابي. فيصطحب زوجته الأيرلندية "كاثرين" الشغوفة بالآثار، والتى تبحث عن مقبرة الإسكندر الأكبر، لينغمسا فى عالم جديد شديد الثراء والخصوصية يجبرهما وأهل الواحة على مواجهة أنفسهم فى زمن اختلطت فيه الانتهازية والخيانة والرغبة بالحب والبطولة.. حصلت الرواية على الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية عام 2008 كما تحولت إلى مسلسل تلفزيوني بإنتاج ضخم.
