《外公的小房间》，是《狮城往事绘本系列》的重点作品。绘本故事背景是牛车水的原貌馆。
原貌馆重现了作者的外公伍业生医师一家六口在1940年代居住的小房间，使作者能“穿越时光”，踏入这个小时便听母亲讲述过的空间。“六个人像挤沙丁鱼一样睡在地上……你外婆打破扑满让我交学费读小学……家里穷到吃腌菜下饭，落下门帘不让邻人看到……”母亲的叙述从记忆库里跳出来，与眼前景物交织，构成作者创作这绘本的灵感。
作者通过小房间的故事，把小读者带到上世纪40年代的新加坡。当年，人民生活贫困，许多人住在牛车水店屋许许多多的小房间内，不但吵杂拥挤，还要共用厨房、厕所、冲凉房。外公一家六口栖身于一个面积约三平方公尺，租来的小房间里。外公是位善心的中医师，尽管自身贫穷，却不收贫者诊金；外婆没受教育，却明白受教育的重要性，打破扑满让妈妈有钱交学费上小学。作者要说明的是，当时人们物质上的贫乏，但生活里所洋溢着的坚韧、包容与温情的富足。
