“红头巾”指的是早年在新加坡建筑工地工作的中国妇女，她们主要是来自广东省三水县，多数居住在牛车水。为了养家活口，她们以劳力赚取微薄的收入，从事的是粗重的建筑工作，包括挑砖块、搬木料、搅合洋灰等。
如今，新加坡高楼林立，红头巾已经成为历史名词。现在的孩子大多不知道，早期有很多红头巾曾经参与新加坡楼房和组屋的建设。
本地绘本作家以细致、感人的画笔，创作了这本《辛苦了，红头巾》。此部绘本绘图精美，通过叙述红头巾在新加坡工作、生活以及落地生根的故事，让孩子们有机会了解早期新加坡人民和外来劳工的生活面貌。
作者也希望通过红头巾的故事，向孩子们宣扬“刻苦耐劳，不怕吃苦”的精神。
