Aider in the Loop: Patch‑First AI Pair Programming with CI Safety Nets

"Aider in the Loop: Patch‑First AI Pair Programming with CI Safety Nets"

AI coding tools are most powerful when they are treated not as autonomous programmers, but as disciplined patch generators inside a controlled engineering loop. Written for experienced developers, staff engineers, and technical leads, this book shows how to use Aider in serious repositories without surrendering reviewability, rollback safety, or team governance. Its focus is practical and exacting: small diffs, explicit trust boundaries, fast validation, and CI as the final authority.

Across the book, readers learn how to structure request-patch-review-validate-commit cycles, use Git as the safety boundary for AI edits, control context in large codebases, and tune edit formats, chat modes, and model roles for quality and cost. It also covers local validation design, pre-commit and CI interplay, human review protocols, and team integration patterns that keep AI assistance compatible with professional software delivery standards. The result is a rigorous operating model for reliable AI pair programming.

Rather than promising effortless automation, this book teaches operational discipline. It assumes fluency with Git, testing, and modern development workflows, and it rewards readers who care about correctness, auditability, and scalable engineering practice. The treatment is advanced, tool-aware, and designed for readers who want sharper control over AI-assisted change management rather than more abstraction from it.
