Brahmarishi Vishwamitra

Brahmarshi Vishvamitra is one of the most venerated rishis or sages of ancient India. A near-divine being, he is also credited as the author of most of Mandala 3 of the Rigveda, including Gayatri Mantra. Before renouncing his kingdom and royal status, Brahmarishi Vishvamitra was a king, thus he retained the title of Rajarshi or 'royal sage'. Historically, Vishvamitra was a Rigvedic rishi who was the chief author of Mandala 3 of the Rigveda. In later Hindu texts, Vishvamitra and Vasistha have a long-standing feud, and scholars have stated they historically had a feud regarding the position of the Bharata purohita. However, this view has been criticized due to lack of internal evidence and the projection of later views onto the Rigveda. In post-Rigvedic literature Vishvamitra becomes a mythical sage. His story also appears in various Puranas; however, with variations from Ramayana. Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha chapter 27 of Mahabharata narrates the birth of Vishvamitra. விசுவாமித்திரர் பண்டைய இந்தியாவின் மிகப்பெரும் முனிவராகக் கருதப்படுபவர். குசநாபரின் மகன். கௌசிகன் என்ற பெயருடைய மன்னன். வசிட்டரோடு ஏற்பட்ட போட்டியின் காரணமாக, கடுமையான தவங்களைச் செய்து பிரம்ம ரிஷியானவர். காயத்ரி மந்தரம் உட்பட பழமையான ரிக் வேதத்தின் பல பகுதிகளை எழுதியதாக கருதப்படுகிறார். புராணங்களின் படி ஆதி முதல் 24 ரிஷிகளே முழு ஞானத்தையும் சக்தியையும் பெற்றவர்களாக இருந்தாக கூறப்படுகிறது. விஸ்வாமித்தர முனிவர் கடுந்தவம் புரிந்தார். அவருடைய தவத்தின் கனல் தேவ லோகத்தில் இருக்கும் இந்திரனுக்கு அச்சத்தினை உண்டாக்கியது. எனவே தேவ கன்னிகையான மேனகையை விஸ்வாமித்தரர் முன் நடனமாடச் செய்து, முனிவரின் தவத்தினை கலைக்க கட்டளையிட்டான். அவ்வாறே மேனகை விஸ்வாமித்திரர் முன் நடனமாடினாள். அவளுடைய நடனத்தினால் முனிவரின் தவம் கலைந்தது. அத்துடன் மேனகையை மனைவியாக ஆக்கிக்கொண்டார் விஸ்வாமித்திரர். இவர்கள் இருவருக்கும் சகுந்தலை என்ற மகள் பிறந்தாள். பின்னர், சகுந்தலை அரசன் துஷ்யந்தனை மணமுடித்து, அவர்களுக்கு பரதன் மகனாக பிறந்தான். ஆனாலும், தன் தவம் மேனகையால் கலைக்கப்பட்டதற்காக மேனகையை விசுவாமித்திரர் சபித்தார். விசுவாமித்திரருக்குத் தனிக் கோவில் தமிழ்நாட்டின் திருநெல்வேலி மாவட்டம், ராதாபுரம் வட்டம் விஜயாபதி எனும் ஊரில் உள்ளது. விசுவாமித்திரரின் கதை வால்மீகி இராமாயணத்தில் விவரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. பண்டைய இந்தியாவின் மிகப்பெரும் முனிவராகக் கருதப்படுபவர் விசுவாமித்திரர் பற்றி பேராசிரியர் முனைவர் கு.ஞானசம்பந்தன் விரிவாக விவரிக்கிறார்.
