Happy Tamil NewYear 2023

Puthandu, also known as Puthuvarudam or the Tamil New Year, is the first day of year on the Tamil calendar, traditionally celebrated as a festival by Tamil speaking people / Tamilans, as the first day of the Tamil month Chittirai. It falls on or about 14 April every year on the Gregorian calendar. The same day is observed elsewhere in South and South East Asia as the traditional new year, but is known by other names such as Vishu in Kerala, and Vaisakhi or Baisakhi in central and northern India. On this day, Tamil people greet each other by saying புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துகள் or இனிய புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துகள், which is equivalent to "Happy new year". The day is observed as a family time. Households clean up the house, prepare a tray with fruits, flowers and auspicious items, light up the family puja altar and visit their local temples. People wear new clothes and children go to elders to pay their respects and seek their blessings, then the family sits down to a vegetarian feast.

தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு, தமிழர் புதிய ஆண்டு பிறப்பதைக் கொண்டாடும் விழாவாகும். இந்தியா, இலங்கை, மலேசியா, சிங்கப்பூர் போன்ற நாடுகளிலும், பிற நாடுகளிலும் வாழும் தமிழ் மக்கள் சித்திரை மாதத்தின் முதல் நாளைப் புத்தாண்டாகக் கொண்டாடுகின்றனர். ஒரு தமிழ் ஆண்டு என்பது வானியல் ரீதியாகவும் அறிவியல் ரீதியாகவும் அளவிடப்பட்ட காலத்தைக் கொண்ட காலப்பகுதியாகும். பூமி, சூரியனை ஒரு தடவை சுற்றிவர 365 நாட்கள், 6 மணி, 11 நிமிடம், 48 நொடிகள் ஆகின்றது. இதுவே தமிழ் வருடத்தினதும் கால அளவாகும். சூரிய மேச இராசியில் பிரவேசிக்கும்போது தொடங்கும் ஆண்டு, மீன இராசியிலிருந்து வெளியேறும்போது முடிவடைகின்றது. ஆகவே தமிழ் வருடத்தின் கால அளவு எப்போதும் சீரானதாகவே இருக்கிறது. இதன் அடிப்படையிலேயே தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு பிறக்கும் நாள், நேரம் கணிக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆங்கில கிரெகொரிய நாட்காட்டியில் பெரும்பாலும் ஏப்ரல் 14 தொடங்கும் தமிழ் ஆண்டு சில ஆண்டுகளில் ஏப்ரல் 13 அல்லது 15 நாட்களில் தொடங்கும். இதற்குக் காரணம் ஆங்கில (கிரகோரியன்) நாட்காட்டி ஒரே சீரானதாக இல்லை என்பதே. நடைமுறைக்கு ஏற்றதாக தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட நாளில் கொண்டாடப்பட்டாலும், தமிழ்ப் பஞ்சாங்கங்களில் அந்த நாளில் ஆண்டு பிறக்கும் சரியான நேரம் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டிருக்கும். அதன் அடிப்படையிலேயே ஆண்டுக்காலம் கணிக்கப்படுகிறது.
