He moves through the world like any other man, listening to ballgames, making coffee, passing unnoticed in crowded streets. But beneath the surface, he carries the memory of something far older than humanity—a long, quiet conflict that has shaped history in ways no one could ever suspect.

For generations beyond counting, unseen forces have lived inside the very structure of human life, guiding it, dividing it, and turning entire civilizations into pieces on a board. What began as a precaution became a habit, and then something far worse. The lines were drawn long ago, and now no one remembers who first stepped across them. All that remains is the struggle, carried out in shadows, where identities shift and trust is a dangerous luxury.

As the night closes in, one man finds himself at the center of it again. He knows the rules. He knows the cost. And when the moment comes, he makes a choice that will echo beyond this single life—one more move in a game that was never meant to be played.

Algis Budrys wrote “Infiltration” during a period when he was producing sharp, psychologically driven science fiction for magazines like Galaxy Science Fiction and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Born in East Prussia in 1931 and raised in the United States, Budrys built a reputation for stories that focused on identity, control, and the hidden pressures beneath ordinary life. His later novels, including Rogue Moon (1960) and Who? (1958), explore similar territory, where perception and reality refuse to align cleanly. “Infiltration” stands as an early example of his ability to blend high-concept science fiction with an intimate, human perspective.
