Practical Forging and Art Smithing

Written by a master craftsman in wrought metal for teachers of industrial arts, Practical Forging and Art Smithing is a comprehensive guide to the blacksmith’s craft, from welding and scarfing at the forge to the making of tools and everyday objects.

Googerty begins with the forge before working through the core techniques of the smithy: scarfing, upsetting, brazing, and the electric, corner, and fagot welds. Projects range from staples, open links, welded chain links, and bolts to cupping tools, a gate hook, a pair of tongs, and a flat cold chisel, while later chapters turn to the making of iron and steel itself, covering pig iron, puddling, the open hearth process, and crucible steel.

Full of useful tips and simple instructions, Practical Forging and Art Smithing will appeal to novice metalworkers and collectors of craft literature alike.
