#1 Elvis Presley, the man who would be known as the King of Rock and Roll, was born a relative pauper in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. His mother Gladys was unable to bear any more children after the complications of the twin delivery, and so Elvis was left as an only child.

#2 Elvis’s mother enlisted the new pastor in town, Frank Smith, to give Elvis some basic guitar lessons. But the tenacious Elvis wasn’t going to sit around and wait for someone to teach him, he was already learning on his own. He had acquired a book on finger charts and guitar chords, and he had studied them extensively.
