When the present novel ‘Chenghiz Khan’ was serialized in Andhra Patrika, a friend of the author Tenneti Suri asked him: ‘Is it really the story of Changhiz Khan’s life or is it a commentary on contemporary politics?’. Tenneti Suri writes a reply in the introduction to the novel. He writes, ‘The rotten politics of the 12th and 13th centuries in Asia (that caused the rise of the great power called Chenghiz Khan) are similar to the global politics today.’ Chenghiz Khan was first published as a novel in 1956. It went through innumerable reprints afterwards. It remains one of the best-selling novels in bookshops of the Telugu states. It is true that a lot of people were brutally murdered as part of the military conquests of Chenghis Khan. But what were the situations Chengiz Khan found himself to be in? Why would someone like Nehru say ‘Chenghiz Khan is my hero’? What was the relationship between the people of Gobi Desert and Chenghiz Khan? Who is this Chenghiz Khan? What was he as a human? How could a gypsy leader of 123 huts end up conquering three-fourths of the world? Was it only due to his military strength? - such were the questions Tenneti Suri attempted to answer in this great, unputdownable historical thriller of a novel.
