It was an entertaining story and the narrators did a good job at creating the atmosphere of 1791 on the one hand where Nella, a 40-something apothecary who is disappointed in life in general but in men in particular is also dispensing poisons. She keeps a register of what she sells and to whom and for who the poison is intended. Enter 12-year old Eliza, who comes to the shop on a mission. A mission she accomplishes. The women are immediately drawn to each other and it is the beginning of an interesting relationship. The story shifts back and forth to this time. On the other side we get to know Caroline, an American woman, interested in history. She too has just been disappointed by a man, her husband. She comes to London by herself and starts to dig in the mud of the river, only to find an object. The vial leads to her new friend Gaynor and to the lost apothecary. In her search for the past, she actually finds her own future.
